As Angie’s List states “Only about 5 percent of the companies McAdams Plumbing Inc. competes with in Denver, CO are able to earn our Super Service Award. It’s a mark of consistently great customer service.”

And customer service really does drive everything we do around here. We want to ensure every customer receives only the best possible experience from the moment they find our company to the moment our professional plumbers leave their home.

We promise to keep striving for excellence and to continue providing service with integrity and high quality craftsmanship.

  • Think Twice Before Shopping Online!

    Think Twice Before Shopping Online

It is a digital age we are in, there’s no arguing that fact. Shopping online has become one of the most convenient services of the internet. It allows you to search for the product you want, compare prices amongst competitors, and have the best option shipped directly to you without ever having to leave your home! You may not get it right away, but still it beats fighting traffic to go to a storefront just to pay a marked up price doesn’t it?

There are some things, however, that are not always best ordered online. Plumbing fixtures tend to be one of these things. In our years of service to Broomfield and Denver we have run into quite a few good intentioned folks who ordered a toilet, faucet, or sink online just to have it arrive and find out it’s basically useless for them. Some of the most common issues we have seen with products ordered from third party websites (i.e. Amazon, Ebay, O.co) are:

    • Fixtures don’t match the application (incompatible)
    • Missing hardware
    • No brand names (makes part matching/replacement impossible)
    • Incorrect or non-standard sizing
    • Do not follow standard plumbing code requirements
    • No warranty

When these errors occur, most of these online shopping websites do their best to right any wrong, but they don’t always have control over the company that develops and ships the product. And let’s be honest, it’s quite the hassle to have to re-box a toilet and ship it back to the place it came from.

This is why McAdams Plumbing recommends that you always purchase your plumbing fixtures from either a plumbing industry supplier (i.e. Ferguson Enterprises, Park Supply, George T. Sanders), a national hardware store (i.e. Lowe’s, Home Depot), or directly from the website of a plumbing fixture producer (i.e. Kohler, Delta, Moen). If you do plan on ordering online, make sure the part you order matches the application EXACTLY. If you have any questions or are hesitating on what you should order, give McAdams Plumbing a call and we’ll help walk you through finding the right product for what you need.

    Shopping online

Following these practices will ensure that you receive the part you are looking for, can easily return the product if something is wrong, and also ensures what you are getting will be under some sort of warranty. If you choose to purchase your product from a discount website, please make sure the product you are getting matches the application EXACTLY. Also it doesn’t hurt to call the company that is shipping the product to inquire about their return policy.

Alright, hope that offers some helpful information. If you have any questions at all regarding this post please leave a comment below or give us a call at 303-465-1900, we’re here to help!

Happy New Year from McAdams Plumbing!

    Happy New Year

Happy New Year everyone! Wednesday marks the first day of 2014 and what a wild ride 2013 has been.

McAdams Plumbing made a lot of strides in 2013. We hired a new Master plumber, we expanded our service area, we won another Super Service Award from Angie’s List, celebrated our first ever company Christmas party, and were able to offer more assistance to our charities and community than any year before.

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of our customers and their families, our friends, neighbors, vendors, and our co-workers for making 2013 such a blessed year. Without you folks out there supporting us and spreading our message we would not be where we are. Thank you so much!

We hope that in 2014 we can continue to grow, offering our great service to more and more Colorado families looking for a plumber to put an end to their searching. We hope that we can give even more back to the community this coming year, and maybe even organize some events of our own.

McAdams Plumbing will continue to listen to what our customers are saying so that we can be of better service to you. We are always learning and always open to suggestions.

All we ask of you is that you have a fun and safe new years celebration. Remember to be thankful for what the previous year has given you, but always look ahead to what can be done to make tomorrow greater than today.

All the best in the adventures of 2014!

  • 99 Dollar Drain Cleaning Explained

    $99 Drain Cleaning

    99 Dollar Drain Cleaning Explained

    99 Dollar Drain Cleaning

At McAdams Plumbing, we believe integrity is the most important part of the plumbing business. That’s why we want to take a moment to shine a light on 99 dollar drain cleaning services. Here’s the big question to wrestle with:

“Why is it that one company will charge 99 dollars for all drain cleaning services and another has multiple charges?”

While that seems like a straightforward question, that answer can be complicated.

Some plumbing companies specialize in only drain cleaning. These companies have less equipment, less insurance, smaller vehicles, and may not be licensed. You don’t need a plumbing license to be a drain cleaner, just the equipment and some experience. So with that in mind they may be able to offer all services for 99 dollars.

Other companies say 99 dollar drain cleaning but have many stipulations. This price may not cover:

    • access fees
    • travel fees
    • diagnostic fees
    • labor fees
    • hazardous/difficult access fees
    • time/length fees
    • machine breakdown fees
    • stair fees (which are fees charged to carry equipment up and down stairs, and yes they will charge you per stair).

These are just some of the many charges that increase that 99 dollar drain cleaning fee to $150.00+.

Another trick of the trade is to offer the 99 dollar drain cleaning service but then send out a salesperson with the plumber who will then work very hard to sell you a camera service after your cleaning. These people are persistent and very good at what they do. They’ll tell you how important it is to camera the line, how it can only be done after a drain cleaning service so you should just do it now, and they’ll even offer your what looks like a discount for having the camera service done in conjunction with the drain cleaning. Now your bill is up over $300.00 when all you needed was a mainline run.

The last, and probably most deceiving, practice is to charge 99 dollars for a drain line “clearing,” not “cleaning.” When this happens the plumber will basically just punch a hole through the blockage in your line for 99 dollars, then charge extra if you want the entire line fully cleaned. A “clearing” service usually comes with no warranty.

All of this information is offered to help make you a more informed consumer. If you are hiring a company for a drain cleaning service, ask them to tell you exactly what the fee covers and to tell you what other fees you could possibly see. All companies know what their drain cleaning fees are and what up charges exist.

With McAdams Plumbing, you’ll get a fully cleaned line, no matter which drain is backing up, for the same price we quote you up front. No games, no hidden fees. We’ll put it all right out there for you so you know exactly what you’re paying for.

  • All About Whirlpool Water Heaters

    Whirlpool Water Heaters

    All About Whirlpool Water Heaters

So recently we ran into a situation with a customer dealing with their Whirlpool water heater. The quick and easy is that it was less than 2 years old, still under manufacturer’s warranty, but was malfunctioning and needed a new part. These folks weren’t sure what to do so they called MP. We gladly went out, diagnosed the problem, and let the owners know what was going on. Here’s where it got sticky. The parts for Whirlpool water heaters aren’t readily available. They sell some at Lowe’s, but not the big ticket items, meaning we had to go through Whirlpool direct. Well Whirlpool does not sell their parts to service companies, only to the owners of the purchased unit. So after our plumber re-diagnosed the problem on the phone with the agent, they came to the same conclusion we did and said they would overnight the part to the customer. At this point the customers have had no hot water for 2 days.

Next day. Part came to the customer as promised by Whirlpool. We were able to fit them Whirlpoolback in the schedule and get the part replaced. But guess what? Same problem. Now back on the phone with Whirlpool our plumber re-diagnosed the problem with the customers present and were told that they sent a malfunctioning part. Another would be over-nighted. Now 3 nights for the customer without hot water.

Next day. Repeat the previous paragraph, only this time, Whirlpool decided to just send out a whole new water heater. So now, these folks are on their 4th day without hot water, needed to wait at least 7 days for the new unit to be delivered, and extremely frustrated with the Whirlpool water heater they purchased. The customer, based on this experience, decided to cut their losses and purchase and install a brand new Bradford White water heater from MP. So now they have all the hot water they could hope for, but it came at a cost of time, hassle, and money.

After MP heard the story of what happened over the course of this job we decided to do a little investigating around about Whirlpool water heaters. Boy were we shocked at what we learned.

Apparently what happened to these folks is not an isolated incident. On the Consumer Affairs website alone there are over 1,400 negative reviews about Whirlpool water heaters. Apparently there was even a class-action lawsuit filed. Here were the top trending complaints according to what was read:

    • Poor customer service
    • Defective pilot ignition systems
    • Premature failure
    • Thermocouple failure
    • Inability to get anyone to service the water heater

So we tell you this not to take shots at Whirlpool, who actually make some of the best dishwashers and refrigerators we’ve encountered, but to inform you, the customer, of what you are purchasing. While the low cost Whirlpool water heater may seem like a deal, the cost of maintenance and the headache that comes along with ownership may not be worth it. While we’re sure there are many Whirlpool water heaters out there performing just fine, it looks like it may just be a bit of a gamble on what you’ll receive. If you ask us, just stick with Bradford White.

Hope this helps answer some questions and shows you why many plumbing companies are unable to assist in the repair of Whirlpool water heaters. Feel free to reply with any questions or comments. We’re here to help. Thanks!

    Are You Drinking Toilet Water?

    Are You Drinking Toilet Water?

Our friends at 9News have posted a great investigation piece on back flow and how it can effect the water in your homes called “Are You Drinking Toilet Water?” You can read the introductory article and watch the teaser here.

The complete video investigation can be watched here.

The big takeaway from this article: be careful if you’re doing your own plumbing. Cross contamination is a big deal and can cause sickness in a healthy person, or more severe issues in a person with a compromised or weak immune system, like children or the elderly.

    Toilet Water

If you’re not completely sure what you’re doing when installing your plumbing, call a professional. It is the job of a licensed plumber to know all codes and regulations when it comes to drainage and back flow, and it’s their job to keep your family safe from cross-contamination.

If you have any questions or need assistance with your at-home plumbing project, call McAdams Plumbing today. We’re happy to take the time to discuss your situation and help you make the best decision for your family and your pocketbook.

  • Grease: Your Drain’s Worst Enemy

    Grease clog in drains

    Grease: Your Drain’s Worst Enemy

Thanksgiving is around the corner, which offers us this week’s blog topic: grease in your drains. It’s important that you remember after that big meal full of sleep inducing turkey, not to pour grease and food scraps down your drain. Most people are under the impression that you can put some food in your garbage disposal, I mean, that’s why it’s there right? Wrong! Even though your garbage disposal may be able to handle small, non-fibrous food scraps, your drains are not designed to. Food waste, grease, and debris builds up in your drain pipes and causes blockages.

One thing worse than grease: soluble fiber!

The best way to avoid this problem is to ALWAYS brush all of your food scraps into the garbage before you wash your dishes. This will ensure you keep your drains clear and clog free and your garbage disposal free of performance reducing grease. In order to properly dispose of grease and oils, especially if using a turkey fryer, follow these steps:

    • Once cooled, pour cooking oil and grease into a non-recyclable container; add kitty litter or coffee grounds, seal the container, and place in the trash.
    • Scrape food scraps from dishes into trash. Minimize the use of your garbage disposal because even cooked foods contain oil and grease that can clog sewer lines.
    • Remove oil and grease from dishes, pots, and pans with a paper towel or napkin.
    • Pre-wash dishes, pans, and pots with cold water before putting them in the dish washer. Hot water does not remove oil or grease but rather liquifies them. Once they cool they return to solids and can clog the sewer lines.

For additional information about how to care for your drains in a safe, natural way, please take a look at this article from our friends at Networx.com:

    What Makes Us Different? Integrity

Culminating our 3 week look at what makes McAdams Plumbing different from other plumbing companies, today we talk about integrity.

    Plumbers with integrity

Now, seriously, I know what you are thinking. Everyone says their company has integrity, so how does that make MP different? The answer is truly in our actions. As a locally run family company we see our customers all the time. They know us, they know our family, and they know our friends. As a company, we must make sure that every interaction we have with a customer is a great one. If for some reason it’s not, we’ll do everything in our power to fix it. We want to make you feel like family. Why? Because it’s the right thing to do! More than that, we are likely going to see you again in the neighborhood, at church, or at the grocery store, and when we do, we want to be greeted with a smile rather than avoidance. The only way to earn that is to prove our integrity to our customers and our community everyday.

    Broomfield plumbers with integrity

When I served in the USAF, the creed was “Integrity first, service before self, and excellence in all we do.” At McAdams Plumbing, we have adopted the principles of that creed into our own business model. We define integrity as “doing the right thing, even when no one is looking,” and that is exactly what we strive for. Our personnel are always honest and trustworthy. All plumbers are fully licensed, ensured, and bonded for you and your home’s safety. We price our work in house, as a board, so that you know you are getting a fair price for the quality work of a Master Plumber. We do not answer to any investors who push bottom line earnings first and fair treatment of the customer later. We don’t have any corporate reference books or “rewards plans” to try and convince you you’ll be getting a deal for overpriced work. No, rather we build everything we do around the customer experience in order to make sure you are safe and happy with your purchase. Why? Again, because it’s simply the right thing to do.

We welcome any questions about our company, our methods, or our pricing. We’d be happy to talk with you over the phone, via email, or heck you can even shoot us a text if you want. Whatever you are comfortable with. Why? Because it’s the right thing to do. We’ll be here for you when you need us.
