  • Hey Plumbers, Be the Doctor!

    Plumbing Doctor

    Hey Plumbers, Be the Doctor!

    Happy Monday everyone!

I was surfing the web this weekend and found a great article about professionalism in the plumbing and service industry. It really spoke to the change McAdams Plumbing is trying to create in the service industry.

Licensed plumbers are experts in their field and their purpose is to protect the health and safety of the nation. That’s a pretty important task when you think about it.

    Doctor Plumber

So why is it plumbing is often a looked down upon as a lower class career field?

My guess is because so many “hack” plumbers started throwing stickers on their truck or van, offering cheap, unlicensed, lazy service to the good people of the world, and those people then began to think that is what you should expect from a plumber.

Well I would strongly disagree. From a plumber you should expect an educated craftsman, who can understand and empathize with your situation, is properly licensed and insured, and repairs your home in a way that ensures you and your family are safe and protected from things like sewage contamination, scalding water, gas leaks, and water related disasters.

Those are the ONLY kind of plumbers McAdams Plumbing employs. Plumbers that work more like doctors than anything else.

So now that I’m off my podium I’ll let you get to the article written by Max Rohr, who is a LEED Green Associate and BPI Building Analyst.  He is the current Chairman of the Radiant Professionals Alliance Education Committee and an outside salesman for Shamrock Sales Inc.

Click here to read the original article in its entirety.

    Be the Doctor

    Max Rohr 06-10-2014

Why is it that doctors are admirable professionals?  What doctors do is commit themselves to education and strive to understand the newest tools and techniques.  They use their skills to keep us safe and healthy.

Why aren’t heating professionals and plumbers treated like doctors? Some are, most aren’t. The contractors who are treated like doctors are treated that way because they take pride in the work they do and communicate the value of their craft.  Plumbers and heating contractors who can explain how they are they are going to use their expert knowledge to keep you safe from scalding water, flooding, mold, carbon monoxide poisoning, combustible gas, electrocution, and water heater rocket takeoffs, while keeping you comfortable should have the same confidence as an OR doctor.  Providing all of these safeties while also saving energy is a admirably complex.

In Germany, you have to be a master plumber to start a plumbing company.  With a higher bar for entry, German plumbers have a higher level of respect.  In the USA, we don’t have the same certification process to enter the trades.  What you can do is search out manufacture and industry association training to improve your pedigree.  If you hand a customer presentation binder with photos of a few meticulously crafted installations and a list of accreditations and certifications you have, you will help demonstrate your pedigree.

Plumbers and doctors both provide valuable services by keeping people safe and healthy.  Without plumbing, doctors would be fighting all day to fight back basic waterborne diseases.  For so long, plumbers have been seen as a few steps down the totem pole from doctors, and that shouldn’t be the case.

I am honored to be a part of the Radiant Professionals Alliance.  The Board I get to work with is made up of some of the smartest minds in the business who are dedicated to making you smarter, better, and more efficient.  I encourage you to make RPA online classes and trade show seminars part of your education portfolio.

Put on a white coat, throw your combustion analyzer around your neck like a stethoscope, and go be the doctor!

  • Permits Are Important!

    Permit BroomfieldPermits Are Important!

At McAdams Plumbing, we get quite a few questions about pulling permits. Some of the most common questions include “what is a permit,” “what does a permit do,” and “why is it important?”

So we thought it might be a good time to address some of those questions in a blog.

With the help of a few other websites, I’ve compiled a list of great answers to those ever elusive permit questions. Let’s discuss!

    What Is A Permit?

“A building permit gives you legal permission to start construction of a building project,” says iccsafe.org.

Basically, a permit is the city’s way of recognizing you are changing or adding a structure or system in your home and assuring that this work complies with all city and state codes.

You pay a small percentage fee of the overall cost of the job to have a professional inspector come out (multiple times if needed) to ensure all the work is done as it should be.

    Remodel Permit

When Do You Need A Permit?

Permits are required when major alterations are going to be undertaken or when mechanical systems (plumbing, electrical) will be modified.

Most cities have their own list of home changes that will require inspections. Inquire with you city’s Building Department for more information.

Common projects requiring permit include:City Permit

    • Water heater installation
    • New roof
    • Structural additions
    • Blocking or adding a door or window
    • Adding/relocating plumbing systems
    • Adding/relocating electrical systems
    • Installing or replacing an air conditioning unit
    • Converting an unoccupied space (garage, storage) into a conditioned occupied space

    What Does A Permit Do?

A permit helps you save time and money by helping to avoid potential problems with your project.

By working closely with an expert code official you can ensure your project is accomplished correctly, is safe, and will last. Their knowledge of building codes help to ensure your project goes off without a hitch!

Permitting protects you from potential lawsuits as well. If something were to happen with your project causing damage or injury, having a permit proves that you took all necessary precautions.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, a permit helps protect the population by reducing the potential hazards cause by unsafe construction practices.

    Why Is A Permit Important?

Shower Remodel PermitYour home is likely one of the largest investments you’ll make in your life. It’s very important to protect this investment to ensure you benefit from it long term.

If you choose to modify your investment (your home), you can lower its value by not pulling permit.

Future buyers will want proof that modifications were done to code. If you can’t prove this you’ll bet they will want it inspected and you’ll be responsible for the changes required to bring it to code.

In extreme circumstances the city may require you to remove the project, leave it vacant (in cases of a full room remodel), or make costly repairs.

Many property insurers or warranters may not cover work done without proper permitting.

Lastly, city Building Officials also have the authority to require owners of new homes to bring projects performed by previous owners up to code or otherwise face penalties. This is why it is so important to have your home inspected by licensed professionals before you buy it.

Hopefully that caught you up and what permits are and why they are important for your home, your family, and your community.

    Thanks for reading along!

The park is currently hosting several promotions including a Dads get in free Father’s Day event and an $8.00 off coupon if you bring in a Pepsi can. See the Promotions page on their website for more information and savings.

    Kohler Touchless

So yea, the nerd in me just got all types of excited over the new Kohler Touchless flushing toilets. They are pretty awesome. Check out the video below:

How cool is that? Not only did Kohler produce a line of their most popular toilet style pre-installed with the Touchless system, they also made it so you can retrofit most toilets with the Touchless kit! So you can make almost any standard toilet a Touchless flush toilet simply by installing the touch less module!

The Touchless flush cartridge runs off of 4 AA batteries and has the average life span of a year with no added maintenance aside from chafing out the batteries. This product works with most canister and flapper toilets. It is not compatible with dual-flush, top-mount flush, pressure-assist, or ballcock valve toilets.

The most important benefit of going Touchless is the improved hygiene. With no need to touch the toilet in order to flush that’s one less surface we spread germs on in a bathroom. Every little bit helps. It’s also a quick, inexpensive, and impressive upgrade to any home. I know I’ll be bragging about mine to all my friends.

The Touchless Kit comes with a 1 Year Warranty.

Frozen Pipes: 7 Easy Precautions to Take

Well I’m sure all of our friends and neighbors noticed the snow over the weekend. That’s Colorado’s way of saying Happy Mother’s Day!

Many folks (myself included)  got a head start on their lawns thinking we were in the Spring free and clear. Not the case apparently.

I’ve posted blogs on how to deal with frozen pipes before, so this will be a refresher. The difference is this time we’ll hear from the great people over at Sobieski Plumbing.

To see the complete blog in it’s origin, click here, otherwise read below to hear their 7 tips for avoiding frozen pipes.

Frozen Pipes: 7 Easy Precautions to Take

Nothing can make a winter more memorable – in a bad way – than frozen pipes. Besides the inconvenience of scheduling repairs and going without water till they’ve been completed, frozen pipes can result in pipes rupturing and potential flooding, resulting in costly damages to home and property. The good news is that with the right preparation and professional assistance, the risk of damage from frozen pipes can be minimized.

    Frozen Pipes

    1. Drain water from outside basins, pools and water sprinkler lines.

If you use an external well pump, turn it off and open the water valves to reduce the pressure in the lines. Keep the valves open until the pressure drops and water no longer exits from the faucet.

    2. Insulate exposed pipes…

…especially in crawl spaces, garages and attics with products designed for water pipes such as “pipe sleeves,” or install thermostatically controlled heat cables. Enlisting the help of a plumbing professional can help save time and effort.

3.Seal air leaks around the home.

Drafts are a source for freezing temperature. Depending on the type of leak, use caulk, weatherstripping or spray foam around window and door frames, dryer vents, electrical wiring, and wherever air leaks are found near exposed pipes.

    4. Monitor your thermostat

Keep your home thermostat set no lower than 55 (McAdams Plumbing recommends 62* due to the harsh nature of Colorado winters) degrees F, even when you’re on away from home for a long period. The warmer it is inside, the less chance the pipes will freeze.

    5. Open cabinet doors

Keep cabinet doors open in critical areas such as kitchens and bathrooms to allow warmer air to circulate around exposed pipes.

    6. Allow your faucets to drip

Have a faucet open just enough to drip. If it’s tied to a hot and cold line, open both lines enough to drip together. Water movement reduces the likelihood of water becoming frozen.

    7. Schedule a seasonal plumbing inspection

Finally, having an expert plumbing service perform a system review to identify potential risks can go a long way towards preventing future damage from frozen pipes.
