Garbage Disposal Dont’s

As the holidays get closer many of us find ourselves spending more and more time in the kitchen. Whether you are preparing the turkey for Thanksgiving dinner or baking cookies for Christmas, your garbage disposal can prove to be a very handy companion. However, you want to make sure that you are keeping your handy companion healthy through all the holiday hustle and bustle. That’s where we come in!

Below we have compiled a list of objects that will surely decrease your disposal’s life span. Remember, it’s a garbage disposal, not an in-sink trash bin.

  • Rice, Pasta, Potatoes, and Beans- The main issue with these substances is swelling. Even the smallest particles of these items will swell when in contact with water. This will eventually gather, swell, and clog your trap.

Garbage Disposal Broomfield

  • Animal Bones- Your disposal is not as strong as you may think. It can not break the bones down small enough to fit through which will ultimately cause a jam.

  • Grease- This one is simple, the grease will solidify and end up clogging a portion, if not all, of your drain.

  • Egg Shells- A common misconception about egg shells is that they help to sharpen your disposal’s blades. However, they ultimately do more harm than good. They do not sharpen your disposal’s blades but they will gladly clog the line.

Garbage Disposal Westminster

  • Fibrous Foods- This means celery, asparagus, lettuce, corn husks, carrots, onion skins, potato peels, etc. The strings of these items have been known to wrap around the blades and cause an issue with motor function. Your disposal can probably handle these substances in small doses but it is always better to be safe than sorry.

  • Non-Food Items- As I stated before, this is a garbage disposal, not a trash bin. This means that things like cigarette butts, twist ties, rubber bands, plant clippings, etc. should not be what you are sending down the drain. As is the common theme of many of the substances previously listed, non-food items are another sure way to clog you drain.

We hope that this list will help to ensure a wonderful holiday season for you and your family. Be sure to follow this advice so you can save money for Christmas gifts rather than garbage disposal repairs!

If you have any further questions do not hesitate to give us a call at 303-465-1900.

*Beware of FOG! Fats, Oils, and Grease vs. Your Kitchen Plumbing

December 10th, 2014

Every home system has small enemies that can wreak havoc on the system. For your heating and cooling systems, it’s dust and dirt; for your kitchen plumbing system, it’s FOG: fats, oil and grease. Keeping these small enemies at bay isn’t difficult, but it does take diligence.

When it comes to your plumbing, staying ahead of FOG can significantly reduce the amount of clogs you experience and keep your kitchen plumbing in Scottsdale, AZ healthy. So what happens when oil, grease and/or fat heads down your drain? Let’s take a look.

FOG: Sticky Stuff

The main problem with FOG materials is that they cling very stubbornly to the inside of your piping. You may think that adding hot water to your piping would remove this; unfortunately, this is not the case. When you run hot water into your piping, it temporarily liquefies the FOG materials; once the water cools, the FOG solidifies again, and does so even further down your pipes. Many people also think that garbage disposals can get rid of FOG; again, this is not true. All a garbage disposal does to FOG materials is make them smaller. As more and more FOG heads down your pipes, the bigger the FOG build-up becomes. Eventually the FOG can restrict your water flow, creating slow drains, and can also cause a clog to develop. The best way to avoid problems with FOG is to make sure they don’t go down your drain.

Ways to Avoid FOG in Your Drains

Here are some suggestions on how to avoid problems in your plumbing from FOG:

  • Scraping – make sure all dinnerware and cookware is thoroughly scraped of food, dressings and condiments before rinsing them off in your sink.
  • Use a strainer – place a strainer in your sink (if it doesn’t already have one) and empty it after use.
  • Don’t ever pour cooking grease down your drain – all cooking grease should be disposed of properly. Wait until the grease is room temperature, then drain all grease into an empty can or jar and throw away immediately.
  • Don’t wash mayonnaise or salad dressings down your drain – scrape all containers containing these kinds of condiments, and if needed, wipe them with a paper towel before rinsing them to reduce the amount of fat and oil that can enter your drain.

WaterCop Has Your Back – Flood Prevention

Recently, one of our industry partners decided get on the flood prevention train and install a WaterCop Pro Series automatic water shut-off valve. After the installation was complete and the system operational, he was inspired to blog about how cool the system is.

So that’s where we come in. Since he did such a great job writing the blog, it doesn’t make sense for us to try and report on what he said, rather we’ll just post it up for him. So, please enjoy the following blog written by our friend Mark from Disaster Restoration Services.

WaterCop Has Your Back!

Minimize Water Damage w WaterCop

Water damage, flooded basements, flood prevention

Coming home after a long day of work or play only to find the flooded basement and the massive water damage which awaits you is never fun. Our company regularly sees all kinds of flooding in houses and, to be frank, it’s never cheap to clean it up. It requires skilled technicians who know what they’re doing, lots of expensive equipment and the inconvenience of all the time lost getting your home back to a livable condition. Ever since people added water to their homes there have always been home flooding and water damage. But now we have WaterCop to help us avoid a lot of home flooding and water damage to it’s contents.

Strategies to Help You Avoid Having a Flooded Basement

Water damage, flooded basements, flooding

Our family just moved into a new house in Erie, Colorado. We liked our old house but we needed something bigger as our family has grown a lot since we originally moved to Northglenn. Our old house had a flooded basement about once a year. Sometimes it was from outside water coming into our house during a storm, sometimes it was from the water drain pipe (which took our waste water out to the city sewer) getting clogged and sometimes it was because we had a water pipe break. Because of this, we’ve added a lot of LeakFrogs to our basement near windows, the washing machine and the drain opening near our water heater. Before we had LeakFrogs it would be several hours before we discovered the flooded basement and the water damage would always be extensive when we eventually found it. However, once we added these little green guardians we would be notified about the flooding long before it became a fully flooded basement and therefore the water damage to our belongings was greatly reduced. We’ve also added LeakFrogs to our new house in the same places as the last house, however, our new house has a lot more bathrooms and lots more places where broken pipes could rupture and completely flood our home if not caught in time. For this reason, we called McAdams Plumbing and asked for their help. For years Rick McAdams had been telling me about this great device he was able to install for us called a “WaterCop.”

Our New WaterCop and an End to Flooded Basements

Water damage, flooded basements, flooding

It took Rick a few hours to install our new WaterCop but after the installation was done I was fully able to appreciate this little device. On the incoming water main from the city Rick put the main device which receives wireless signals from the many water sensors which were placed around the house wherever there was a potential source for flooding to begin (under sinks, behind toilets, under the dishwasher, near the clothes washing machine, etc). The sensors communicate to the main unit wirelessly and they are each powered by two “AA” batteries. They also have a wire that leads to a sensor with two metal prongs. Those prongs are secured under a baseboard and, when they get wet, they send a signal to the main unit and the water to the house is shut off.

There is also a main control panel. It’s easy to just look at it to see what the status of the system is and if there are any problems. When we leave the house for vacation or a long weekend we can also just go down to the main panel and turn all of the water in the house off with the press of one little button.

WaterCop Saves You Money on Your Insurance

To my surprise, after the WaterCop was installed, I was told to submit the invoice for the installation to our insurance agent. Apparently, since the risk of basement flooding (and all the associated water damage) is considerably reduced, my agent told me that I could get a reduction on our home insurance rates.

Final Thoughts on WaterCop and An End to Flooded Basements

Water damage, flooded basements, flooding

The afternoon after Rick had installed the WaterCop system we got an unplanned test of the system. My wife was mopping the bathroom floor and got a little water on one of the sensors. Sure enough, it started emitting a loud beep. I pulled the sensor out from under the baseboard and dried it off and the beeping stopped. I walked down to the control panel and the light had switched from green to red — indicating that there was a problem. It told me which sensor had reported the problem and, knowing that the problem was solved, I pushed the green button and magically the water to the house was turned back on. No drama, no mess and, most importantly, NO WATER DAMAGE!!!

All in all, I can’t imagine why everyone in the world wouldn’t get one of these units installed into their houses. The cost for these systems and the installation is roughly equal to what it’ll cost you to fix a very small water loss in your home. And, with this system you can live worry-free that if you start to get a flooded basement you’ll know about it and it’ll be stopped long before it becomes a big problem. I’m told that the company which produces WaterCop are even working on an upgrade to this system so that it will send a text message to your phone, telling you that you’ve got a problem even if you’re not home when the problem occurs.

As always, if you’ve got questions about WaterCop, home flooding, flooded basements or water damage, please call The Experts at 303-801-0300 today!

Thanks Mark, and great work on the blog!

Team Nora Broomfield

On Sunday, November 2nd, the McAdams family had the privilege of meeting Nora Rozgony and the Rozgony family at the Team Nora Family Walk.

In May, 8 year old Nora went to the hospital feeling very sick. After antibiotics had no effect on the illness she returned to her doctor where they discovered an aggressive tumor in her chest.

After two rounds of chemotherapy and surgery to remove the mass, another tumor was found in her abdomen which led to emergency surgery.

Since then Nora and her family have been traveling to Boston for specialized care and treatment in an experimental drug trial at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.

The Team Nora Family Walk was organized by friends of the family and the community of Red Leaf here in Broomfield. It was an amazing show of support with hundreds of residents walking, filling out get well cards, and creating chalk murals in support of Nora.

The family is continuing to accept donations to help offset the costs of treatments, travel and overnight stay fees, and loss of work due to the aggressive changes in the schedules of Nora’s parents. You can send your donations to the Cross of Christ Church located at 12099 Lowell Blvd, Broomfield, CO 80020.

You can also learn more about Nora and her family and donate via the CaringBridge website by following this link, or follow her story on her community Facebook page found here.

On behalf of the McAdams family, I wish Nora a speedy recovery and want the Rozgony family to know they are in our thoughts and prayers constantly. If there’s anything we can do to help, we’d love to.

Memorial Day Veterans Celebration – Broomfield

Summer has finally broken through the winter veil, so that means Memorial Day is right around the corner.

If you’re a Broomfield resident, why not spend part of your day reflecting on the sacrifices our country’s great veterans have made?

Memorial Day

On Monday, May 26, from 11:00am – 1:00pm the Broomfield Veterans Museum will be hosting their annual community Memorial Day event at the Broomfield County Commons Park.

Memorial Day Broomfield

The event will begin with an Honor Guard presentation of the colors by the Broomfield Police and Firefighters.

There will also be a recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, a bugler playing Taps, and a local Broomfield student will sing the National Anthem.

The Broomfield Mayor, Randy Ahrens, will be on hand to speak followed by food provided by the Broomfield Lion’s Club and music provided by the 101st Air National Guard Jazz Band and the Broomfield Civic Chorus.

A variety of military exhibits will on display in the grassy areas of the park for everyone to enjoy.

Finally you can expect to see a performance by uniformed World War II reenactors.

Whew! That’s quite a lot to happen in a short amount of time. Certainly sounds like an All-American good time though!

Broomfield Color Guard

You can certainly expect to spot some of the veterans from McAdams Plumbing out showing our support. If you recognize us, please come up and introduce yourself. We love to meet our neighbors in the community.

Well, that’s it for this Monday. Hope everyone has a wonderful week!

Hopefully March has been a great month for all of our friends and their families, it certainly has been good for McAdams Plumbing and A Precious Child. MP was so excited to have the opportunity to be the presenting sponsor for the 5th Annual Bowl for A Precious Child Fire vs Police Tournament. It was a great time with great people. While the Broomfield Police Department just edged out North Metro Fire for the win, the true winner was A Precious Child. They were able to raise over $9,500.00 to benefit their mission. Keep up the good work APC, can’t wait for next year!

Grease clog in drains

Grease: Your Drain’s Worst Enemy

Thanksgiving is around the corner, which offers us this week’s blog topic: grease in your drains. It’s important that you remember after that big meal full of sleep inducing turkey, not to pour grease and food scraps down your drain. Most people are under the impression that you can put some food in your garbage disposal, I mean, that’s why it’s there right? Wrong! Even though your garbage disposal may be able to handle small, non-fibrous food scraps, your drains are not designed to. Food waste, grease, and debris builds up in your drain pipes and causes blockages.

One thing worse than grease: soluble fiber!

The best way to avoid this problem is to ALWAYS brush all of your food scraps into the garbage before you wash your dishes. This will ensure you keep your drains clear and clog free and your garbage disposal free of performance reducing grease. In order to properly dispose of grease and oils, especially if using a turkey fryer, follow these steps:

  • Once cooled, pour cooking oil and grease into a non-recyclable container; add kitty litter or coffee grounds, seal the container, and place in the trash.
  • Scrape food scraps from dishes into trash. Minimize the use of your garbage disposal because even cooked foods contain oil and grease that can clog sewer lines.
  • Remove oil and grease from dishes, pots, and pans with a paper towel or napkin.
  • Pre-wash dishes, pans, and pots with cold water before putting them in the dish washer. Hot water does not remove oil or grease but rather liquifies them. Once they cool they return to solids and can clog the sewer lines.

For additional information about how to care for your drains in a safe, natural way, please take a look at this article from our friends at Networx.com:
